Connect Square to OpenRate

Connecting Square takes a few minutes: an owner or manager selects Connect Square, approves OpenRate on Square’s page, links the right Square location and checks that the location is ready. Connecting does not by itself turn on payments in production for every location.

Before you begin

  • A Canadian Square account in Canadian dollars, with seller onboarding and bank setup completed
  • An owner or manager account in OpenRate; only owners can select the Square location
  • The OpenRate restaurant you want to connect: a Square connection belongs to one restaurant at a time

Connect your account

  • Choose the restaurant, then open Payment settings
  • Select Connect Square
  • Sign in on Square’s page and approve OpenRate’s access
  • Return to OpenRate
  • If several eligible Canadian Square locations are found, choose the one to link to this restaurant and confirm it

What OpenRate asks for

The authorization covers your business profile and the ability to read and create payments, including collecting OpenRate’s fee on each payment. OpenRate does not request access to your Square orders. Access tokens are stored encrypted and never reach the browser.

Check readiness and go live

  • Check the connection status in Payment settings; “Configured” alone does not guarantee that checkout can take payment
  • The owner confirms the location and its activation for production: connecting does not activate every location automatically
  • Test with a manager before the first service

Troubleshooting

  • No eligible Canadian location: the connection stays restricted until the Square account has an active Canadian location in Canadian dollars
  • Authorization expired or revoked: select Reconnect Square and approve again
  • Guests see that online payment is unavailable: check that a payable bill exists, then ask the owner or a manager to review the payment settings
  • Payments should stop for a restaurant: an owner can select Disconnect, which stops Square payments there

Keep in mind

Payments land in the restaurant’s own Square account, and your POS stays your official billing system. For the bigger picture, read our article on paying with Square in Canada.
