How to get more Google reviews for your restaurant, within Google’s rules

You can ask guests for a Google review, and a direct link or QR code at the end of the meal is the easiest way to do it. What you cannot do is pay or reward guests for reviews, ask only your happy guests, or write reviews yourself. Reply to every review you receive, positive or negative.

Asking is allowed

Google lets businesses ask customers to leave reviews. Most guests who enjoyed their meal never think to write one, so a simple request makes a difference. The rules are about how you ask, not whether you ask.

Make it one tap

Your Google Business Profile gives you a direct link to your review form. Put it where guests already look: on the payment confirmation screen, on a small card with the receipt, or on a QR code at the table. Every extra step, such as a search or a sign-in prompt, loses guests.

Ask at the right moment

  • Right after payment, while the meal is fresh and the phone is already in hand
  • In person, when a guest compliments the food or service
  • Not hours later by email, where the request competes with everything else in the inbox

What Google does not allow

  • Offering a discount, a free dish or any other reward in exchange for a review
  • Asking only guests you expect to be positive, while steering unhappy guests elsewhere
  • Discouraging or prohibiting negative reviews
  • Writing reviews yourself, or having staff, friends or family write them
  • Buying reviews from a third party

Offer feedback, do not filter it

A private feedback option can be useful for guests who want to talk to a manager. It should sit next to the review link, not replace it. Every guest should be able to reach the public review, whatever their rating. Check Google’s current policy on prohibited and restricted content before you design your flow.

Answer every review

Reply to positive reviews with a short, specific thank-you. For a negative review, thank the guest, acknowledge the problem without arguing, and offer to continue by phone or email. Future guests read your replies as much as the reviews.

Be patient

A steady flow of honest reviews builds over weeks, not days. Asking every guest, consistently, works better than occasional pushes.
